The bruised and tattered edge of darkness slid with ever increasing speed downward, pressing heavily on a small sliver of luminous blue-gray resting on the horizon. The forest seemed to hold its collective breath. And then…in a slow, sputtering blink, the sun’s last bit of dominion was gone. Night had come. It was time to feed. On silent clawed feet, malevolence slow danced through the brush. So begins the contact between the first humans to enter Mesoamerica and a singular alien presence who eventually gives them a great gift of life. This is the account of fresh beginnings that becomes heinous in a fight for dominance. Treachery, love, murder, and horror all fuse into a series of lethal transgressions. The old and new sects battle with dire consequences that could spell annihilation for both. Underlying everything is a psychotic priest named Pochotl, whose ambition and perverted appetites complicate any chances for compromise or resolution. Three young people from the village are forced to be his adversaries and still struggle against the bitter hostility of a demon creature named Bela. It is primarily their story that is told as it is often seen through their eyes.

Compelling story, well written and well edited. You can tell the author put lots of thought into every aspect of the story, and it paid off. Refreshingly free of typos and the other mistakes so often found in e-books. It is a bit morbid in places but not in a gratuitous way. I have read it twice and am hoping for a sequel.Product details

Beneath the Darkness Archie Oliver Books Reviews
Oh my, I just finished this amazing book! I have not read a lot of this genre, but if this book is an example, I am hooked.Talk about exciting and unique this one has all that and more Beneath the Darkness is artfully written and I couldn't wait to read on to see what would happen next. The characters are intriguing as is the plot. Has this author written other books because if he has, I want to read them.
A compelling first novel, Beneath the Darkness is a dark, often grim but ultimately fulfilling exploration into what makes humanity unique, and what we only think makes us unique. Oliver's narration, a fluid omnipresence, is quick-paced and richly woven without falling into purple prose, and his detailing paints a vivid picture of a world many of us know little about. The books setting, based in a native village deep in the jungle, could be hard to envision without prior knowledge or relying on cliche, but Oliver finds endless ways to fit in subtle details about the stones, the woodworking, the clothes and weapons and even food, laying out a realistic scene without the reader feeling like they're just receiving a dry outline.
In the same box, the shifting point of view gives us just as intimate a look at the creature lurking in the woods. Though an antagonist for the village, the creature is just as sympathetic at times as he is horrifying, and much of the book simply writes the creatures actions as-is, leaving the reader to explore whether it is relateable, sadistic, sympathetic or evil, and whether he is anything like us.
Oliver is unflinching when it comes to the death, violence and horrors of life in the village and in the jungle. For some with a softer sensibility to descriptions of gore, death, torture and brutality, it may not be an easy read; additionally, there are a handful of allusions to sexual assault and rape which some may find triggering, but I feel they are neither gratuitous nor glorified. It's written as a reality, and the more graphically violent scenes, I feel, only make the reader more aware of the characters pains and losses, and I far prefer it to simply cutting to a chapter break.
In summary, Beneath the Darkness is definitely worth a read. Its often dark tone is well balanced with the strength of the characters (I especially like that Oliver chose a younger protagonist), and I look forward to more of his work.
This is a great book. Had me riveted to the very end. Hope there's a sequel coming soon.
Hard to put down. Very entertaining. Fast paced and dark. Love the back story and adventure. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys horror stories.
Captivating. Looking forward to additional books from Mr. Olive.
This stunningly written, gruesome tale pits a tribe of ancient Mayan Indians against an alien creature. Although reading the gory sections was difficult for me; it didn’t stop me from reading on to find out what happened next! I’ll definitely watch for the sequel to this brilliantly creative, unique story.
I have to admit, as the book began, it reminded me a little of The Hobbit/Dr. Who/X-Files. I wasn't sure I would be able to really grab on to that many concepts. However, around pg. 30 I realized I was starting to get invested in the characters. (Be aware, this is dangerous for this book. Oliver, a master of extremely graphic and highly descriptive word-play, displays a very "Game of Thrones"-like mentality when it comes to keeping characters around.) The story is unlike anything out there, currently, and I have to give props to the author for remaining so non-conformed.
The graphic violence paired with the suspense of one incredibly awful, awful, awful person doing executing horrendous acts for personal gain left me very unsettled. I had to give myself a break during one of the torture scenes, which is surprising. Oliver is a little too skilled at painting a vivid...(almost too vivid)...picture of pain and suffering.
I would highly recommend this book if you like suspense, a little sci-fi, and think you can handle a little 'blood and guts'.
Compelling story, well written and well edited. You can tell the author put lots of thought into every aspect of the story, and it paid off. Refreshingly free of typos and the other mistakes so often found in e-books. It is a bit morbid in places but not in a gratuitous way. I have read it twice and am hoping for a sequel.
